Life in my food bubble

Updated: Mar 24, 2022

You're probably wondering just how many food allergies are in our household, let me break it down for you. All items listed are what we can't eat at our house.

Me: wheat, buckwheat, rye, corn, quinoa, barley, soy, dairy, cinnamon, ginger, anchovy, crab, lobster, shrimp, scallop, mackerel, tuna, oyster, sesame, peanuts, almonds, walnuts, cashews, coconut, pistachio, pine nuts, pecans, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, chestnuts, watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, butternut squash, zucchini, cucumber, avocado, banana, green bell pepper, green beans, peas, lima bean, and lamb.

That's 43 food allergies just for me alone, not to mention the 3 other people in the house who have some of my shared allergies. The rule of thumb in our house is if I can eat it, then it's ok for everyone else. It does get a little tricky when it comes to my kids though, because some things one can eat but not the other. Here is there break down:

Hubby: dairy, codfish, hazelnut, peanut, salmon, scallop, sesame, shrimp, soy, tuna, walnut, and wheat.

B: wheat, dairy, sesame, soy, peanut, and scallop.

E: wheat, peanuts, tree nuts (coconut too), soy, and sesame.

As you can see, we have a lot of foods to avoid. This means that when grocery shopping, we have to read labels on everything all the time. It can seem like a lot of work but being able to cook good homemade meals for my family is a priority. We don't get to eat out at many places, only 3 actually and even then, there is no guarantee that there will be no cross contamination of our food. Therefore, majority of the time we cook at home and bring our own food wherever we go. Having this extensive of an allergy list means that we shop at up to 10 different grocery stores when we run errands. This is why I started this blog, to show that just because we can't eat a bunch of things, doesn't mean we can't have good food.
